When Nosebleeds or Sinus Issues Need Medical Attention

Nosebleeds are common in children, especially between the ages of 2 and 10. Most are caused by dry air, nose picking, allergies, or minor irritation, and they stop within 5 to 10 minutes with proper home care. Sinus symptoms can range from a stuffy nose with a cold to a true sinus infection that needs treatment.

At KIDS Urgent Care, we evaluate children with frequent or hard-to-stop nosebleeds, ongoing sinus pain or pressure, and cold symptoms that are not improving. Bring your child in if a nosebleed does not stop after 10 minutes of proper pinching, if your child has more than 5 nosebleeds a year, or if sinus symptoms have lasted more than 10 days without improvement.

Some symptoms require emergency care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for nosebleeds that follow a head injury, very heavy or rapid blood loss, bleeding that will not stop after 20 minutes of proper pressure, or if your child has trouble breathing, severe headache, swelling around the eyes, or stiff neck with fever.

Common Signs and Home Care for Nosebleeds & Sinus Issues

For most nosebleeds, the following home care can help:

  • keep your child calm and have them sit or stand with their head tilted slightly forward, not back
  • pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bridge, firmly for at least 10 minutes
  • do not let your child blow their nose or pick at it for several hours
  • a cool compress on the bridge of the nose can help

Sinus issues may show up as:

  • nasal congestion or thick nasal drainage
  • cough that gets worse at night
  • facial pain or pressure around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead
  • headache
  • low-grade fever
  • bad breath or postnasal drip

Most colds clear up on their own. A sinus infection is more likely when symptoms last more than 10 days without improving, worsen after starting to get better, or come with a fever above 102.2°F and thick nasal drainage for 3 or more days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my child's nosebleed at home?

Have your child sit up and tilt their head slightly forward, not back. Pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bridge, firmly between your thumb and finger and hold for at least 10 minutes without letting go to check. A cool compress on the bridge of the nose can also help. Avoid having your child blow or pick the nose for several hours afterward.

Go to the emergency room or call 911 for nosebleeds that follow a head injury, very heavy bleeding, bleeding that will not stop after 20 minutes of proper pressure, signs of light-headedness or weakness, or trouble breathing.

Most colds get better within 10 days. A sinus infection is more likely when symptoms last more than 10 days without improvement, get worse after starting to improve, or include fever above 102.2°F with thick nasal drainage for 3 or more days. A pediatric provider can help confirm.

Common causes include dry air, allergies, nose picking, or irritation from frequent colds. If your child has more than 5 nosebleeds a year, or bleeding episodes that last longer than 10 minutes, a pediatric provider may recommend further evaluation with an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

Walk-ins are welcome, and you can also reserve your time in advance for added convenience.
